The scale of Japan's March 11 earthquake and tsunami wasn't the only thing that surprised geologists.

The 9.0 earthquake in Japan — the fourth most powerful quake ever recorded — also caused an unusually severe and widespread shift in soil through liquefaction, a new study suggests.

Powerful 7.4 Quake Hits Japan: Tsunami Alert Issued

TOKYO - A powerful earthquake hit northeastern Japan late Thursday, prompting a tsunami alert to be issued, according to a TV report.

The quake, which hit at 11:32 pm local time (1432 GMT), had a magnitude of 7.4, according to the US Geological Survey, which said it struck 66 kilometres (40 miles) east of Sendai.

Radiation In Milk?

First they found radiation in milk in Spokane, Washington.  Then they found radiation in milk in San Luis Obispo County, California.  Now they have found radiation in milk in Arizona as well.  Should we just start assuming that all of our milk is going to have nuclear radiation from Japan in it until further notice?  Of course federal authorities insist that the levels of radiation being detected are completely safe and that nobody should start worrying about the milk that they are drinking.

Tokyo Electric To Build US Nuclear Plants

I need to speak to you, not as a reporter, but in my former capacity as lead investigator in several government nuclear plant fraud and racketeering investigations.
I don't know the law in Japan, so I can't tell you if Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) can plead insanity to the homicides about to happen.
But what will Obama plead?  The Administration, just months ago, asked Congress to provide a $4 billion loan guarantee for two new nuclear reactors to be built and operated on the Gulf Coast of Texas — by Tokyo Electric Power and local partners.

In just a matter of a few hours Japan went from being a nation with the third largest economy on the planet to a country of total devastation. Now that the flood waters have receded much of the country finds itself left with a crippled infrastructure that has no means of providing the basic necessities to its people. Currently there is a shortage of everything including food, water, shelter, medicine and gasoline and no one knows when these necessities will be available to the Japanese people. Even areas of Japan that were not hit by the tsunami are seeing shortages of these items.
