Powerful 7.4 Quake Hits Japan: Tsunami Alert Issued

TOKYO - A powerful earthquake hit northeastern Japan late Thursday, prompting a tsunami alert to be issued, according to a TV report.

The quake, which hit at 11:32 pm local time (1432 GMT), had a magnitude of 7.4, according to the US Geological Survey, which said it struck 66 kilometres (40 miles) east of Sendai.

President Obama will give a statement at 3:30pm EST on the situation in Japan. We have no doubt that it will be a classic 2-3 minute quick statement with no meaningful dialog. I mean come on, if Obama was taking this crisis seriously he would not wait 6 days to come forward and address the nation on the matter.
But then again he took 7 days to comment on the revolution in Egypt so maybe he like the Japanese better than the Egyptians. But in all seriousness, don't expect to hear any more information out of Obama that you you are getting off the web right now.

Desperate Families Left To Forage For Scraps In The Snow In World's Third Richest Country

Homeless, desperate people clambered over snow-covered debris where their villages had once stood, gathering armloads of firewood as Japan's humanitarian crisis escalated yesterday.

In scenes more befitting a poverty-stricken Third World country than the world's third-richest nation, hungry people wrapped themselves in odd scraps of clothing in a futile attempt to keep out the cold in temperatures only just above freezing.

They foraged for food, crying out with delight when they found an undamaged can of food here, a still-edible packet of noodles there.

Now that the flood waters have receded much of the country finds itself left with a crippled infrastructure that has no means of providing the basic necessities to its people. Currently there is a shortage of everything including food, water, shelter, medicine and gasoline and no one knows when these necessities will be available to the Japanese people. Even areas of Japan that were not hit by the tsunami are seeing shortages of these items.

TOKYO: Japan stocks tumbled Monday and the central bank poured a record amount of cash in a bid to soothe money markets shaken by Japan's biggest ever earthquake, a devastating tsunami and a nuclear emergency.

Stocks saw a post-quake sell-off with carmakers, banks and electronics firms taking a hit on fears for the economy as power shortages prompted rolling blackouts and plants remained closed in quake hit areas, hitting production.
