Libya: Does Anyone Really Want To Help Them?

It has been less than a week since the United Nations Security Council voted to intervene in Libya which in turn quickly brought about air strikes on key installations, the launching of 110 tomahawk cruise missiles and the airspace over Libya declared a no fly zone.

But now, just five days into the fight, it appears the wheels are coming off the cart.


The US has made it known that it wants to turn the reigns over to the UN in the days ahead so as not to get bogged down in a third Middle Eastern war. Other UN nations involved including Britain, Germany and France all have opposition to the US pulling back its involvement in the conflict mainly because it would mean that each of these nations would have to increase there level of involvement in the conflict.

According to an article from the UK DailyMail  there is growing tension as to who will lead the operation:

"Deep divisions between allied forces currently bombing Libya worsened today as the German military announced it was pulling forces out of NATO over continued disagreement on who will lead the campaign.

A German military spokesman said it was recalling two frigates and AWACS surveillance plane crews from the Mediterranean, after fears they would be drawn into the conflict if NATO takes over control from the U.S.
The infighting comes as a heated meeting of NATO ambassadors yesterday failed to resolve whether the 28-nation alliance should run the operation to enforce a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone, diplomats said."

It is growing increasingly clear that these fellow UN nations expected the US to handle the lions share of the fighting as well as shoulder the financial burden for this conflict. Now that they see that the US has no intention of this becoming another Iraq, they all want to take their toys and go home. I find it almost comical that Germany stated that they are "recalling their two frigates and AWACS crews because they are afraid that they might be drawn into the conflict".

Excuse me, but why did Germany send the ships and planes into the region if they were not planning on using them?

This just goes to show that NATO is nothing more than a group of cheerleaders for the US military. As long as the home team shows up for the game they will stick around and cheer, but when the team leaves the field the cheerleaders are right behind them.

Obama never should have agreed to this action in Libya unless he was willing to stay the course, which he is obviously not willing to do. I believe this will be "egg on the face" for the US once Obama pulls out of Libya and turns things over to the UN to handle. Muammar Gaddafi will undoubtedly view this as a victory over the US, claiming that he drove the Americans out of Libya. This will only help boost his popularity and making the fight that much harder for the rebels moving forward.

In short, this is proving to be a botched operation from the get go. What we have is a lot of nations all stepping foward and demanding action in Libya, that is, as long as it is someone else who is doing the acting.

I swear, I've been to the zoo and seen shit fights at the monkey house more organized than Operation Odyssey Dawn!
